This volume of collected articles examines the former USSR via an anthropological approach to the study of religion. According to editor Catherine Wanner: “To study from an anthropological point of view means to use comparative description and analysis; to consider a certain phenomenon from a holistic perspective; to avoid evaluative judgments but hold on to analytical passion; to use the particular (micro level) for understanding the whole (macro level).” There is a single exception to the “former USSR” rule: the article by Iuliia Buyskykh is dedicated to the pilgrimage of Ukrainians to holy places in Poland. The collected volume covers both the Soviet and post-Soviet periods.
