Abstract. Ihor Medvid’s book Prophet or Heretic? Ivan Franko’s Religious Worldview and His Relationship with the Clergy is a comprehensive study of the evolution of Ivan Franko's views. The question of Ivan Franko’s personal religiosity and his attitude toward the Greek Catholic Church is examined in the broader socio-political context of the period, which was key for the national self-determination of Ukrainians and for the Greek Catholic Church. The author explores Ivan Franko’s relationship with the clergy, his analysis going beyond the simplified dichotomy of “atheist – believer.” Ivan Franko’s personal religiosity is examined in all the complexity and contradictions of human nature, allowing us to see a living person behind ideological clichés. However, the author also does not neglect how Franko’s worldview transforms, especially politically, under the influence of modern changes caused by secularism, the affirmation of national identity, and Ivan Franko’s involvement in the creation of the Ukrainian national project. The study is based on a wide range of primary and secondary sources: the epistolary heritage of Frankо and his contemporaries; the scientific, literary, journalistic, and memoir works of Ivan Frankо; the press of that time; and contemporary research by scholars specializing in Frankо studies, as well as generally relevant works by historians and philosophers.
