On the History of Religious Studies in Six Essays

The Russian book At the Origins of Religious Studies: From the History of Foreign Religious Studies of the 19th—First Half of the 20th Centuries by Viktor Barashkov, David Damte, Stanislav Panin, Ekaterina Korostichenko, and Valeriya Sleptsova is a collected monograph that includes six original contributions, compiled into five chapters, on the development of religious studies thought and the critique of religion. The essays in the book examine, in sequence, the earliest textbooks on religious studies, Western anthropology of religion, problematic reflections on the psychology of religion, the establishment of the academic study of esotericism, and Western freethought. All texts are based on primary sources. The main criticism of the reviewer consists in that the history of freethought has a weak connection to the history of religious studies. Furthermore, the last part of this chapter, devoted to the New Atheism movement, goes far beyond the declared chronological frame of the book. However, the book under review is valuable research, which moves us to think about the underpinnings and boundaries of religious studies.
