Classification Matters or, Why You Should Care About Scholarship on the Category “Religion”

Анотація

Анотація. У цьому есе здійснюється критичний аналіз категорії «релігія» не як самоочевидної чи позачасової сфери людського досвіду, а як інструменту класифікації з конкретними політичними, правовими та соціальними наслідками. Спираючись на новітні дослідження у критичному релігієзнавстві, автор стверджує, що академічна галузь релігієзнавства змістилася від вивчення «самої релігії» до аналізу того, як і чому певні соціальні явища класифікуються як релігійні. На прикладі історичних кейсів і правових досліджень, зокрема дискусій щодо статусу ісламу у Сполучених Штатах та юридичного переозначення релігійних символів у Європі, у цьому есе показано, як означення чогось як «релігійного» або відмова в такому означенні може стратегічно впливати на соціальну владу, ідентичність і механізми управління. У роботі стверджується, що академічне релігієзнавство слід розглядати як аналіз дискурсу систем класифікації та їхніх практичних наслідків, а не як нейтральний опис нібито релігійних явищ.
